About BranchWatch
BranchWatch tracks structural changes to FDIC-insured bank branch networks in the United States: closings, openings and branch sales. Every record on this site is transcribed from official structure-change records that banks report to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, published through FDIC BankFind Suite.
Methodology
- Branch closings are FDIC structure-change events with change code 721; openings are code 711 and branch sales code 722. We republish the bank, branch address and effective date exactly as filed.
- “Nearest remaining branches” are computed from the FDIC's current list of active branch locations using straight-line distance between coordinates. They are estimates, not driving distances.
- “Bank exits city” and “no other active branch recorded in city” flags compare the closing against the FDIC's current active-location records, matched on the city name the bank reported. Nearby branches just outside the reported city limits are not counted.
- Branch-level and market-share deposit figures come from the FDIC's annual Summary of Deposits (June 30 reporting date). Market share is a bank's share of all FDIC-insured branch deposits in that geography.
- Quarterly financials (assets, deposits, net income, ROA, ROE, net interest margin, noncurrent loan rate) are FDIC-reported figures. We publish them as reported and do not produce safety ratings or failure predictions.
- The failed-bank list is the FDIC's official failures dataset since 1934, with deposit and asset figures as of the quarter before failure.
- Data refreshes automatically every night from the FDIC BankFind Suite API. Last generated: August 7, 2026.
Limitations
- Banks file structure changes with a delay, sometimes of several weeks. Recent totals will grow as filings arrive.
- The FDIC dataset covers FDIC-insured institutions. Credit unions (NCUA-insured) are not included.
- A “closing” filing can accompany a relocation or consolidation nearby. Always verify with the bank before drawing conclusions about service in an area.
